‘Playing by the Rules’ Workshop

As more teachers are interested in incorporating e-learning elements into the language classroom, Oxford University Press organized a workshop on 5 March 2016 to share with teachers various ways to put the e-learning tools to good use. Our guest speakers were Dr Paul Sze, Assistant Professor of the Faculty of Education of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Ms Jenny Leung of Hong Kong Baptist University Affiliated School Wong Kam Fai Secondary and Primary School.

In the first part of the workshop, Dr Sze explained why language awareness training is important to students learning English. Dr Sze used ample daily-life examples to illustrate why over-generalized grammar rules can be ambiguous and how language awareness is beneficial to the teaching of grammar. By means of instant feedback apps on their mobile devices, the teachers were all actively engaged in the language awareness activities prepared by Dr Sze.

Ms Jenny Leung then shared her experience and observations about her e-learning lessons with the audience. Ms Leung drew an analogy between the teaching steps and a three-course meal and provided a step-by-step guide to conducting effective e-learning lessons. Ms Leung also gave teachers a lot of practical advice and suggestions on how to plan e-learning lessons and explained how she motivates students to learn English through a flipped classroom.

During their sharing, Dr Sze and Ms Leung used a number of interactive e-learning resources with the teachers and all participated actively with enthusiasm.

Here are some snapshots of the workshops.
