Oxford Primary English Seminar—Catch the new wave: How to boost primary students’ English ability in the time of curriculum updates

To provide teachers with a comprehensive solution to unleashing the potential of language learners, OUP organized a seminar on Saturday, 20 January 2018. In addition to the motivating textbook series, Ready, this event also marked the debut of Oxford’s new primary English textbook series, Living Oxford English (LOE).

The ELT Editorial team of OUP conducted a lively role-play to explain how Ready and LOE cater for learner diversity. Ready provides a motivational and blended learning experience, while LOE promotes life-long learning and global awareness. Being the only publisher adhering to the curriculum updates in the English Language Education Key Learning Area Curriculum finalised in November 2017, OUP aims to revolutionize teaching and learning by making English lessons interactive and enjoyable, Christine Chau, Publishing Director of OUP, observes.

The seminar then gave teachers some tips on how to equip students for the challenges of English language learning in secondary school. Ms Jenny Leung, Assistant English Panel head and Co-head of e-Learning team of HKBU Affiliated School Wong Kam Fai Secondary and Primary School, identified some key areas of consideration, including exposure to various text types and adequate preparation for integrated tasks.

In terms of integrating STREAM education in the English language curriculum, Ms Simmi Tam, the English Panel Head from the pioneer school, Yaumati Catholic Primary School (Hoi Wang Road), emphasizes the importance of a well-planned curriculum with up-to-date learning and teaching strategies. Ms Lilian Law, an English teacher and the winner of the Oxford Primary English Outstanding e-Learning Awards 2016–2017, demonstrates how the e-learning approach facilitates students’ transition from KS1 to KS2 through extensive reading and continuous learning beyond the classroom.

The seminar was enthusiastically received. Teachers were impressed by how the student-centred and teacher-friendly materials in Ready and LOE effectively address the curriculum changes.
