Oxford Secondary English Seminar—Reach for the STARS

At OUP, we strive to provide both Junior and Senior Secondary students with the necessary learning tools to reach for the STARS and succeed in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSE). To achieve this, we held a Secondary English seminar – ‘Reach for the STARS’ on Saturday, 24 March 2018 to provide strategies to teachers for making the best use of texts to teach text grammar and tips on integrating the teaching of reading and writing skills.

Through a lively and informative role-play, the ELT Editorial team demonstrated how Oxford English (Second Edition) helps Junior Secondary students Seamlessly transition to Senior Secondary with its Total Diagnostic Pack, Advanced process writing, Relevant multimodal input and output and Supportive text grammar learning. Having built a strong foundation in Junior Secondary, students are then able to continuously improve and refine their English language skills in Senior Secondary thanks to Oxford Advanced and Essential Exam Skills (Second Edition). This new edition of Oxford Advanced and Essential Exam Skills fully integrates and streamlines the teaching of reading and writing skills in one skills book for better student performance. It also features more mock tests and includes easy-to-use exam skills boosters. Together, Oxford English (Second Edition) and Oxford Advanced and Essential Exam Skills (Second Edition) provide a comprehensive solution to all your education needs and allows your students to reach for the stars in the HKDSE.

In addition, three experienced teachers shared their experience and tips for teaching text grammar, and reading and writing skills. Dr Paul Sze from The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Ms Jenny Leung from HKBU Affiliated School Wong Kam Fai Secondary and Primary School shared their successful experience of using Oxford English (Second Edition) to teach text grammar and gave teachers many useful tips on raising students’ text grammar awareness. Mr Cheung Kai Lam from Henrietta Secondary School gave an insightful talk about the great benefits of integrating the teaching of reading and writing skills to increase students’ abilities in both of these essential skill areas.
