HKBF Seminar 2015: Learning English when you walk the streets

This year’s theme seminar at the Hong Kong Book Fair organized by ELT was ‘行街學英文’ (‘Learning English when you walk the streets’) which was held on 16 July 2015. Our guest speaker, Dr Paul Sze, introduced a secret passage to English learning, i.e. through the enhancement of our language awareness. Based on his invaluable teaching and learning experience, Dr Sze believed this can be achieved if we could be more attentive to the English encountered when we walk the streets. With vivid examples taken from shop notices, road signs, public announcements, etc. in everyday life, Dr Sze demonstrated a lively way of learning English, which certainly could help us raise our language awareness and in turn enhance our English proficiency.

The seminar received remarkable support from the public, especially teachers of English. The audience listened to the seminar with great interest. After the presentation, OUP Editorial Director, Perry Lam, exchanged his views on this topic with Dr Sze. This was followed by a Q&A session which prompted various questions from the enthusiastic audience.
