1 Choose a text
For print texts, determine your students' reading
levels with this test:
What's my reading level?
Refer to the SBA Kit for quizzes and worksheets to help
familiarize students with the various genres and the HKEAA-recommended
titles.
Then find suitable texts for their interests and abilities.

2 Prepare your students
The SBA Kit includes everything you need to carry out the
SBA assessment tasks:
- Worksheets familiarize students with the text, genre and task
type.
- Notecard templates help students organize their ideas and opinions
into a practical outline for use in the assessment.
- Skills focus highlights specific SBA-related skills in the four
assessment criteria categories:
- Pronunciation and delivery
- Communication strategies
- Vocabulary and language patterns
- Ideas and organization
- Reading and viewing guide help students get the most out of
their texts.
- Preparation videos on CD-ROMs 1 and 2 give examples of how students
can be prepared for the group interaction tasks.

3 Give feedback
Two sets of HKEAA assessment criteria for students' use are included
in the SBA Kit:
- The self or peer evaluation form introduces students to the
assessment criteria. It can be used to give feedback during assessment
practice, e.g. if the student is an audience member.
- The student-friendly assessment criteria form is a simplified
version of the official HKEAA assessment criteria, and gives students
an overview of the criteria.
Used together, these forms will give students a stronger grasp
of what is expected of them in assessment.
Teachers and students can view examples of common errors and a
range of performance levels in both the video and transcripts of
sample assessment tasks.
The video also includes feedback on sample assessment tasks, to
help focus students on areas for improvement.

4 Do the assessment
The step-by-step approach to SBA ensures that all the conditions
for an assessment are fulfilled:

This guarantees an efficient and guided assessment
process for teachers.
Download our marking sheets, containing the latest
version of the HKEAA official assessment criteria and space to make
notes. Using the marking sheet in your assessment tasks allows you
to focus on the descriptors for each of the criteria on one handy
sheet.
- The video includes students carrying out live and unscripted
formative and summative assessment tasks conducted by an experienced
SBA practitioner.
5 Moderate the results
Moderation is a key part of the SBA process, and one that teachers
will be less familiar with.
- The video features completely live, unscripted assessment, feedback
and moderation in action.
