Talk about China with Oxford reader series and the activity-based English course have been well-loved by school users since they have been launched. On 29 June 2024, we held a joint-school competition where students from different schools could share what they had learnt. Around 150 students from 14 schools joined the competition, competing for prizes and awards.

We invited three renowned academics and educators to be the judges for the competition, including Professor Jason Derrick Harding, Head and Professor of Department of English of City University of Hong Kong; Mr Denis Wong, Lecturer of Department of English Language Education of the Education University of Hong Kong; and Mr Dion Chen, Principal of Ying Wa College and Chairman of Hong Kong Direct Subsidy Scheme Schools Council. Mr Denis Wong shared some final tips with the participating students on enhancing their English presentation skills before the competition session. He also shed light on enriching our presentations with the use of AI technology.

During the competition, students had three minutes to present in teams on topics from our Talk about China with Oxford readers, such as wildlife animals in China, the Silk Road, famous Chinese figures like Mulan and Monkey King. The contestants demonstrated impressive creativity and English skills in their presentations. Some students even portrayed famous Chinese figures in dramas in lovely costumes. The judges shared their comments and expressed great appreciation for the students’ outstanding performances.

The competition provided a platform for students to showcase their learning on topics about China and develop their presentation skills. It was a fun and happy knowledge-exchange experience, fostering a better understanding and appreciation of China. The event concluded with an award ceremony filled with cheers, laughter and support from teachers and parents.
