Recent research reveals that students have lost about 35% of a normal school year’s worth of learning during the pandemic. The effects of this learning loss are likely to be long-term and substantial. Therefore, we organized a Junior Secondary ELT webinar ‘Get back on track with Oxford’ on 4 March 2023 and invited three experienced educators to share tips and ideas on how to re-engage students and help them make significant progress in learning.

The webinar started with a polling section for teachers to vote the biggest challenge they are facing since face-to-face classes have resumed. The sharing sections by the frontline educators will introduce the ways to tackle these challenges, support teachers and help students get back on track.

Vice-Principal (Academic Affairs, Secondary Division) and English Literature Panel Head of HKBU Affiliated School Wong Kam Fai Secondary and Primary School, Ms Jacqui Koo, used the acronym ‘PREPARE’ – Personal touch, Roles of students, Explicit instructions, Planning of lessons, Analysis of learning performance, Realistic goals and Exchange ideas, to present her ideas on sparking curiosity and facilitating self-directed learning in the post-pandemic English classroom.

Another challenge that teachers were facing during the pandemic was how to cater learning diversity. During the webinar, Ms Elaine Cheng, Assistant Principal and Vice English Panel Head and Ms Carman Ng, Vice English Panel Head from Caritas Chong Yuet Ming Secondary School have shared some strategies and practical examples in lessons for re-engaging and motivating diverse learners. Their sharing sparked the discussion with attended teachers in the Q&A section and many of them are very interested to know more details.
