The grammar workshop ‘Design language awareness tasks that enhance students’ grammatical competence’ was held on 9 May 2016 and received remarkable support from primary school teachers. The workshop called on two distinguished guest speakers—Dr Paul Sze, Adjunct Assistant Professor of the Chinese University of Hong Kong; and Ms Jenny Wong, English Teacher from Hong Kong Baptist Convention Primary School—to share their valuable insights on enhancing students’ grammatical competence through language awareness (LA) tasks.

Dr Sze began the first part of the workshop by stressing the importance and best timing of language awareness training. He shared his creative ideas on designing LA training tasks based on three approaches: LA lessons, incidental LA training and LA for fun. Next, Ms Wong outlined the use of LA tasks to teach the present perfect tense and conditional clauses in her primary 5 and 6 classes respectively. She emphasized the importance of using songs and photos taken in daily life in the lessons. The day ended with an interactive LA activity hosted by Dr Sze.

The workshop was very well received, with teachers expressing tremendous interest in the speakers' presentations. Here are some snapshots of the day.
