To support teachers in offering effective online lessons, we organized a Junior Secondary ELT webinar ‘Moving Forward and Beyond—Effective Blended Teaching Strategies’ on 25 March 2022 to share ideas on how to improve students’ writing skills. We are pleased to announce that more than 600 teachers participated in the webinar.

Vice-Principal (Academic Affairs, Secondary Division) and English Literature Panel Head of HKBU Affiliated School Wong Kam Fai Secondary and Primary School, Ms Jacqui Koo, shared her ideas on using guided discovery strategies for teaching writing. She emphasized the importance of making students aware of different text types and writing genres, and how doing so enables students to identify the structure, audience and tone of a writing task more easily. Besides this, Ms Koo also demonstrated how to use guided discovery strategies to help students plan, write and review their work.

Professor Icy Lee, Associate Dean (Professional Programmes) and Professor of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, shared ways to empower students to play an active role in writing. She suggested how teachers could arrange different individual and group tasks for students before, during and after writing. Furthermore, Professor Lee provided a lot of useful advice on what teachers can do during COVID-19 and beyond.

The COVID-19 pandemic situation in Hong Kong remains volatile. Even though the summer holidays have been pushed forward, Oxford University Press persists in offering a better learning and teaching environment for all of you.
